I read his achievements and I will be reading more about him from his books. I can just say that what an incredible career he had. I salute him for serving India at such a level all his life. It is very inspiring to me and others. Indeed, India has lost one of its eminent administrative personality. May Allhah bless his soul and bestow upon his mercy on his loved ones.

I knew Mr. Mahmood bin Muhammad from 1965 when his elder son Irfan Mahmood and I were classmates in HPS. Irfan continues to be one of my dearest friends and all through our school years we literally lived in each other's homes. When I returned to Hyderabad from the US in 2000 I renewed my contact with Uncle and Aunty and of those times I recall especially a conversation I had with Uncle when we were talking about Police Training. We spoke about this because I also teach at the NPA and the Academy of Administration, Mussoorie - and Uncle was very supportive and appreciative of that. I asked him what he considered to be the single most critical quality of a police officer to enable him to lead. He replied in one word, 'Courage.' And then added, 'And that is what is missing the most today.' He then proceeded to tell me some stories during his very eventful career of crisis situations and what he observed in others - courageous and cowardly behavior - and drew lesson from them. We would speak in Urdu and he had a style of narration which kept the listener spell bound - a natural consequence when the speaker is speaking about his own life and speaking from the heart. May Allah forgive his sins and grant him the highest station in Jannah. It was a pleasure and honor to know him.

Dear Zehra apa, Irfan, Salman & families. Assalam u alaikum wrb
Mehmood Uncle & Anees Auntie are one among the precious Gems in our family. Although they have departed us almost 5 years apart each other but their souls are still immortal in our hearts as their memories are embedded in our mind. May Allah bless them with maghferah & place them in the highest cadre in Jannathul Firdaus.

May Allah empowered you and our families to withstand such big loss with patience and courage and guide us to follow Hidayath & Tawfeeq on their footprints for our generations to come. Aameen

I was extremely sad to hear of MBM sahab's passing. His kindness and politeness remain ingrained in my head. Aside from these virtues he was a wonderful storyteller. I will miss him. May Allah grant you his family - peace.

"Surely we belong to Allah and to Him shall we return".

It's a great loss to Hyderabadi community in general and Indian muslims in general that a great intellectual has passed away leaving behind legacy of steadfastness; impeccable character and honesty. I was fortunate to have a brief interaction with him in Saudi Arabia during his tenure as Ambassdor of India in Saudi Arabia. I know the family well through my friendship with Salman.

Salman, I can only pray that Allah give you sabr to handle this personal loss. We all join in prayer for his maqfirat-Ameen.

O Allah, surely Mahmood Bin Muhammed is under Your protection, and in the rope of Your security, so save him from the trial of the grave and from the punishment of the Fire. You fulfill promises and grant rights, so forgive him and have mercy on him. Surely You are Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Mir Quadir Ali

I had the good fortune to have met and interact with him thrice in 2013.. During this meeting, I got the opportunity to thank him, from the bottom of my heart, for his contribution to society as a Muslim. He is among the very few Muslims after Independence who have made such a mark and contributed to such an extent..
Among my prized possessions is his book "Religion, Politics and Good Governance".. it is prized since he had gifted it to me by his own hands.
I pray that Allah Grants him Maghfirat and the highest grade of Jannat. Ameen... I also pray that his family comes to term with the loss, though I know the void can never be fulfilled. Ameen

Fayaz Ahmed

May Allah bless him with the highest place in Jannah. Aameen.

Dear Salman,

This website describing your late father’s achievements and contributions to Indian governmental services and describing his charitable work is a tribute from your heart. It was a great read and depicts his enormous ability and inner drive to bring about a change towards good in society. The entire country of India has lost a great literary genius and thinker but I am sure his writings will guide future politicians. I can see that you are extremely proud of your father and I congratulate you for making an amazing web site that will take every one through the journey of your father’s career.

Everybody has to leave this world undoubtedly. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (إِنَّا لِلّهِ وَإِنَّـا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعونَ), "Surely we belong to Allah and to Him shall we return".
He lived highly successful life both in public and in private. He had clarity of expression and thoughts, and intellectually inclined. During my meetings with him in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, and Hyderabad, he always had words of wisdom for me and for the community.
May Allah SWT grant him Janat-ul-Firdaus and Sabre-e-Jameel to his family, Ameen.

I was not related to him by blood, but only by marriage (Mr. Mahmood bin Muhammad was my father-in-law). Yet, the affinity that I had developed for him over the years had blurred the distinction between blood-relationship and in-law-relationship. It has been almost twenty six years since my own father had passed away. The loss one feels for a deceased parent never truly goes away, no matter how old one is, or how old the parent was at the time of his/her death. Time is a great healer, they say, and the loss of a parent does indeed become less intense over time. In my case, the presence of my father-in-law in my life, and the closeness of the bond that had evolved between us, helped to assuage the feeling of loss of my father for all these years. With the demise of Mr. Mahmood bin Muhammad on Oct. 18, 2013, I felt like I had lost a parent all over again.

When I first met him in 1976, he was already a well-known figure in Hyderabad, who was highly regarded as an efficient administrator and innovative police theoretician, with an impeccable reputation for incorruptibility and high moral integrity in the police service. However, it was not until 1983 that I really got to know him personally, when I had the privilege of performing Haj with both my parents and my parents-in-law. It was there that I was impressed by the unusual balance of practical worldly-wisdom and spirituality that marked his personality. His deep understanding of the spiritual meaning of the rituals of the Haj helped make my experience of the Haj more meaningful and fulfilling.

I got to know him more closely when, after his retirement from the Indian Police Service, he served as the Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia from 1985 to 1987, as that period happened to overlap with my family’s expatriate days in the Kingdom. After his return to Hyderabad, I was even more impressed by how actively he continued to contribute to society at various levels, mostly by his writing of many books, his articles and speeches on a broad range of topics, and by his services as a senior Trustee of H.E.H. the Nizam’s Trusts and many other philanthropic, educational, medical and financial institutions. He indeed continued almost all of those activities right up to his last days.

He was not merely an arm-chair philosopher, but a down-to-earth, witty and practical man-of-action as well, who was also a great communicator, and who, above all, had an astonishing ability to constantly learn and grow. Even during the last few years of his life, when he had advanced into his late eighties, he continued to possess, and productively apply, a razor-sharp intellect and a laser-focused ability to articulate his thoughts on an amazingly broad spectrum of topics that made him truly unique. I had the good fortune to observe these outstanding attributes of his at close range during my efforts to get the second, expanded edition of his latest book, “Religion, Politics, and Good Governance” published in the U.S. in 2012.

With his passing, Hyderabad in particular, and India in general, has lost a truly remarkable person. May Allah grant him the highest place in jannat-al-firdaus! May his legacy live on through his numerous books and through the many institutions he helped promote, nurture and strengthen during his lifetime. Í hope this website will also help in that regard. Great job Salman, with the design of the website!
